Agreement Inked between MoYLE and NAFEA, Protest Called Off

All protest programmes announced by the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) have been called off following an agreement between the Ministry of Youth, Labour and Employment (MoYLE) and the NAFEA.

The decision towards this end was reached after both sides agreed to make optimum efforts to conclude the process of amending the Foreign Employment Act and Regulations at the earliest in a bid to make foreign employment more transparent, safe and dignified.

It may be noted that the association of foreign employment entrepreneurs on August 7 had launched a protest putting forth a 15-point demand.

The Association had also announced that it would halt the deployment or placement of Nepali workers to labour destinations from today.

Association’s Chairperson Dik Bahadur Khatri shared that the protest programmes were suspended following a discussion between the government and representatives of the Association in the presence of Minister for Youth, Labour and Employment Ramji Yadav.

Khatri explained that the protest has been put off for the time being as addressing some of the forewing employment entrepreneurs’ demands would require time.

He informed most of the 15 demands submitted by the Association were policy-related and those issues would be incorporated into the ongoing process of amending the Foreign Employment Act and Regulations.

“The demands presented by the Association are as it is,” he mentioned. However, he added that some of the issues would be addressed through amendments to the Act, prompting the Association to back off its protest programmes for the time being.

As per the agreement, the Department of Foreign Employment will facilitate in addressing the demands raised by the Association if requests are submitted along with necessary evidence and documents.

If the demands could not be addressed by the Department, they will be addressed through the Ministry, the agreement noted. (RSS)
