Master Plan Developed for Long-term Change in Transport Structure in Kathmandu Valley

A master plan has been developed to transform the transport structure of Kathmandu Valley, focusing on creating a safe, orderly, and sustainable public transport system.
Key stakeholders, including Arjun Jung Thapa from the National Planning Commission, emphasized the importance of enhancing east-west and north-south transport networks.
The plan highlights the need for new infrastructure to improve connectivity and traffic management, particularly through the construction of alternative routes and the restructuring of major intersections.
The initiative aims to address traffic issues in the Valley by implementing 22 infrastructure-related programmes and 13 public transport improvement programmes across short, medium, and long-term phases.
The overarching goal is to establish a more organized and sustainable transport system by 2050, incorporating mass transit options, high-capacity public transport services, and the expansion of existing highways.
Joint Secretary Sushil Babu Dhakal noted that the plan includes significant structural reforms to make public transport more user-friendly, advocating for a company model for transport operations and improved route management.
Specific projects outlined in the master plan include new bridges, car parking facilities, cycling lanes, and upgrades to major road intersections.
Additionally, the plan proposes integrated solutions such as underpasses, underground tunnels, and overpasses to alleviate congestion in high-traffic areas.
The master plan includes the Maharajgunj and Chabahil–Gaushala underground routes, overhead bridges at Chabahil–Bagmati and Tripureshwor–Maitighar, a river corridor route along the Bishnumati, a new Karmanasha bridge connecting Satdobato–Godawari, widening the ring road, bridge construction in the Thapathali–Tripureshwor area, upgrading the Bagmati riverbank corridor, and improvements to the Boudha Road intersection.
The master plan aims to provide long-term solutions to traffic problems in major congestion areas of the valley through underpasses, underground tunnels, sky roads, and integrated operation of large buses.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has underscored the necessity of a comprehensive transportation strategy to manage rapid urbanization and increasing vehicle numbers effectively.
Coordinated by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the master plan aims to create an efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly urban transport system, ultimately fostering sustainable urban development and ensuring accessibility for all citizens.
