Lawmakers Demand Probe Into Nepali’s Self-Immolation
Lawmakers have called on the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the self-immolation attempt and subsequent death of Ganesh Nepali in federal capital Kathmandu.
At the start of today’s House of Representatives meeting, opposition members, including those from the main opposition party, stood in protest. Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal then gave the floor to MP Basana Thapa.
Thapa questioned why the government remained silent over the self-immolation attempt by 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali of Mugu last Thursday.

She remarked that repainting a green bus blue does not ensure anyone’s safety, and added that squatters are being forced into situations where they must jump into rivers.
MP Bhumika Limbu Subba stated that Nepali’s act was triggered by a fine of Rs. 10,000 for parking his motorcycle, calling it tragic that such an environment compels citizens to attempt self-immolation.
She urged the government to reflect on why citizens are being driven to death.

MP Parvati Bik said that it was unacceptable for citizens like Ganesh Nepali to be forced to burn themselves alive, demanding compensation for the bereaved family.
MP Radhika Ramtel also stressed the need for an investigation into the incident.
MP Gyan Bahadur Shahi argued that the poor and distressed cannot survive in the capital under current conditions.

He criticized the system as favoring only the privileged, noting that citizens are compelled to pay higher taxes than in Europe yet receive services comparable to Somalia. (RSS)
