Bat Savitri Festival Celebrated Across Nepal’s Tarai-Madhes Region

Women across districts in Nepal’s Tarai-Madhes region are celebrating the Bat Savitri festival with great devotion and enthusiasm, praying for their husbands’ long life, good health and family prosperity.
Since early morning, women have been gathering at nearby temples and beneath banyan and peepal trees to take part in worship rituals.
According to tradition, married women observe a day-long fast and offer prayers to the sacred banyan tree and to Savitri, a revered figure symbolizing devotion and marital fidelity in Hindu mythology.
Devotees offer vermillion powder, tika, rice grains, flowers and seasonal fruits such as peas, chickpeas, mangoes, lychees, and bananas as part of the rituals.
They also listen to the traditional Bat Savitri story during the ceremony.
The festival holds special cultural significance among the Maithili community and is believed to promote faith, dedication and unity in marital and family life.
