Nepal in UNGA: Foreign Minister Khanal Holds Talks With Japanese Counterpart

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu held a bilateral meeting in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Motegi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the recent devastating floods in Nepal. He offered condolences to the bereaved families and sympathies to those affected.

He praised the continuous efforts of the Government of Nepal in rescue and relief operations and assured that Japan stands with Nepal. He also committed that Japan would continue its support to Nepal from the emergency phase through medium- and long-term recovery.

Foreign Minister Khanal thanked the Government and people of Japan for their condolences and solidarity. He also informed that Nepal has been making every effort, without leaving any stone unturned, to search and rescue missing persons, including foreign nationals and Japanese citizens.

The meeting also discussed the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan this year.

Foreign Minister Motegi highlighted Japan’s continued support to Nepal in strengthening democracy and nation-building. He expressed confidence that the upcoming Nepal–Japan Festival in November would contribute to deepening the friendly relations between the two countries.

He further assured that Japan would continue to support Nepal’s development initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government.

Expressing gratitude for Japan’s long-term cooperation, Foreign Minister Khanal stated that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Nepal is keen to further expand and strengthen Nepal–Japan relations in the days ahead.
