New Western System to Bring Heavy Rain Across Nepal

A new western weather system is entering Nepal and is expected to trigger widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and a drop in temperature across the country this week, according to meteorologists.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said Nepal is currently under the partial influence of westerly and local winds, along with a low-pressure area near the eastern region and a low-pressure trough in the upper atmosphere over central and eastern Nepal.

Meteorologists say the incoming system is likely to intensify rainfall activity from Monday night onward, bringing moderate to heavy rain in several parts of the country.

Weather and Environment Expert Ujjwal Upadhyaya said the western wind system will carry colder northern air into Nepal, causing temperatures to drop despite the ongoing pre-monsoon season.

He also warned that Kathmandu Valley and many other parts of the country could witness moderate rainfall, while one or two places may experience heavy showers on Monday and Tuesday.

According to weather experts, the same system is also expected to affect parts of Sri Lanka and southern India, including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, before rapidly spreading across Nepal.

The department said partly to generally cloudy conditions are prevailing over Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, with ongoing rainfall and thunderstorms in some hilly and mountainous areas.

On Monday and Tuesday, rainfall activity is expected to increase further in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, with chances of thunderstorms, lightning and light snowfall in some high Himalayan areas.

Meteorologists say repeated pre-monsoon rainfall in recent weeks has prevented temperatures from rising sharply, creating cooler-than-usual weather conditions across many parts of Nepal.
