Lawmakers Urge PM to Raise Issues of Climate Justice in UNGA

Lawmakers have advised the Prime Minister to present issues concerning Nepal’s peace, climate justice, mountain conservation, disaster management, and international cooperation to the global community during his statement before the United Nations General Assembly.

Participating in a special session of the House of Representatives today, they expressed the view that the Prime Minister should appeal to the international community for support regarding relief and rehabilitation of disaster survivors.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sushma Swarnakar expressed the hope that the Prime Minister’s visit would be fruitful and productive, while called for addressing issues such as the voice of Nepal’s mountains regarding climate justice and the concerns of marginalized communities.

Likewise, RSP MPs Shraddha Kunwar Chhetri, Samiksha Baskota, Kripa Maharjan, Bina Gurung, Dr Ojaswi Sherchan, Sujata Tamang, Manju Bhusal, Gyanendra Singh Mahata, Rima Bishwakarma and Sushil Khadka were of the view that the global community must be pressured on the international stage to reduce climate risks.

They emphasized the need for rehabilitation efforts that consider development models, land restoration, and the socio-cultural aspects of communities to minimize future disaster-related losses. They also highlighted the need for an integrated national security policy to manage geopolitical crises, which could pose a threat to national security.

Sajida Khatun Siddique of CPN (UML) stated that the Prime Minister should present issues of mountain conservation and the foundations of development to the international community during the visit. Nepali Congress lawmaker Sushila Dhakal (Acharya) suggested that the Prime Minister should present evidence of the suffering caused by the impacts of climate change.

Nirasha Chaudhary (Dagaura)of Nepali Communist Party demanded the formulation of long-term plans and the resolution of problems faced by locals living near wildlife reserve areas. (RSS)
