Central Zoo Reopens, Bird Flu Under Control

The Central Zoo at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur has reopened to the public from today.

The zoo had been closed since June 19 after bird flu infection was confirmed among crows, vultures, geese, and other birds.

Following treatment of sick birds, sanitation, and necessary management, environmental sample tests showed no presence of the avian influenza (bird flu) virus, leading to the zoo’s resumption.

According to the zoo administration, a meeting on Thursday involving senior officials from the Department of Livestock Services, the Central Veterinary Laboratory, and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division decided to reopen the zoo.

Zoo spokesperson and information officer Ganesh Koirala stated that the zoo will remain open for visitors from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with all visitors required to leave by 5:00 PM.

The zoo management has urged visitors to maintain a safe distance from animals and birds while observing them. Previously infected enclosures have been cordoned off with red ribbons, and visitors are requested not to linger unnecessarily in those areas and to keep their distance.

Additionally, the public has been requested not to consume food brought from outside in open spaces, to dispose of waste properly in dustbins after use, and to compulsorily wear masks. (RSS)
