Binance Recovers $3 Billion of Funds Stolen in Major Cryptocurrency Hack

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, says it has secured approximately $3 billion of the $6.3 billion stolen in what is believed to be one of the largest cryptocurrency heists on record.
The company said it had frozen or recovered nearly half of the stolen digital assets, while the remaining funds were still believed to be under the control of unidentified hackers.
Binance initially suspected that an engineer’s compromised laptop had enabled unauthorised withdrawals. However, subsequent findings indicated that the cyberattack was more extensive than initially believed.
Several blockchain analytics firms have linked the incident to a North Korean hacking group. The scale of the theft surpasses the $1.5 billion hack targeting cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in 2025.
The United States Secret Service has said it is working to identify, freeze, trace and recover the stolen funds. The agency also pledged to identify those responsible for the cyberattack and bring them to justice.
Binance confirmed that it was cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the investigation.
Although Binance said its US-facing exchange was not affected, US authorities are involved in efforts to trace the stolen assets, particularly those linked to US-based financial systems. The stolen funds reportedly include US dollar-pegged stablecoins such as Tether and Circle.
Binance has sought to reassure its customers, saying their funds remain safe and that the company would cover all losses resulting from the incident. Agency
