Landslides Block Major Highways in Nepal

Torrential rainfall since Thursday has caused severe disruptions to road networks in Nepal.

Due to this several key highways and alternative routes blocked due to landslides and road damage.

The Ilam-Rajduwali section along the Mechi Highway has been completely obstructed with vehicles banned from the road.

Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal confirmed that the road is closed until further notice due to breakdowns at multiple locations.

Likewise, the Tilkeni-Simalgola-Shilpur road, an alternative route to the Mechi Highway, is also blocked due to rain and landslides.

The Mechi Corridor (Kechana-Kanchenjunga road) has been closed since early October last year after its concrete bridge at Maikhola in Belase was collapsed.

With all roads connecting Ilam to Jhapa now blocked, road connectivity between these two regions has been severed leading to transport disruptions.

Meanwhile, in Kavre district, continuous rain has triggered landslides along the BP Highway, particularly in areas like Namobuddha Municipality-6, Roshi Rural Municipality-7 and other locations along the highway.

Both routes of the road have been blocked by debris, causing severe traffic congestion especially around Dhulikhel.

Authorities have warned that it will take some time to clear the landslides and reopen the BP Highway urging travelers to check road conditions before embarking on any journey.

Meanwhile, the Narayangadh-Muglin road section was also blocked near the Tuin Khola bridge due to a landslide, but the road has now been cleared.

The traffic along there has resumed after the debris was removed.

The Bharatpur Division of the Department of Road reported that stone fall has ceased, allowing for safe passage.

However, travelers are advised to be cautious due to the high risk of further landslides in the area.

As the monsoon season continues, road authorities across Nepal are urging travelers to exercise caution, stay updated on weather conditions and plan their journeys accordingly to ensure safety.
