Israel Launches Air Strikes on Rafah
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have carried out air strikes on Rafah after what it described as a Hamas attack on Israeli troops in Gaza, calling the incident a “bold violation of the ceasefire.”
In a statement, the IDF said the strikes targeted “militant infrastructure” following an assault on its soldiers operating in the area.
Hamas, however, has denied breaching the truce, insisting it remains committed to the ceasefire. The group accused Israel of “continuing to violate the agreement,” which was brokered earlier this month to halt hostilities and allow limited withdrawals of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza.
Under the deal, Israeli troops were expected to pull back from several areas but retain a presence in key zones, including Rafah, near the Egyptian border.
The current escalation marks the most serious confrontation since the ceasefire took effect.
Israel launched its campaign in Gaza after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led assault in which about 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel and 251 others taken hostage.
According to the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 68,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the Israeli offensive began. (Agencies)
