Nepal Set to Celebrate Laxmi Puja Honouring Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity
Nepal is celebrating Laxmi Puja this evening, worshipping Goddess Laxmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, as part of the five-day Tihar festival.
Observed on the new moon day of the lunar month of Kartik, the festival is also known as Sukha Ratri, or the Night of Happiness.
On this occasion, people clean and decorate their homes, illuminate them with oil lamps and colourful lights, and perform rituals to welcome Goddess Laxmi. According to religious belief, worshipping the goddess in a clean and brightly lit home brings prosperity and good fortune to the household.
Laxmi Puja also coincides with the birth anniversary of Nepal’s celebrated poet and writer, Laxmi Prasad Devkota, widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest literary figures.
