Skip the Fees: 97 Royalty Free Mountains You Can Climb in Nepal

Birat Anupam

Nepal, home to more than 1,300 mountains in the heart of the Hindu Kush Himalaya, has opened 97 virgin peaks for royalty-free climbing.

The decision, effective from July 17, 2025 for two years, waives climbing royalties on select mountains to promote lesser-known destinations, according to Himal Gautam, Director at Nepal’s Department of Tourism.

Of the 461 peaks officially open for commercial expeditions, the 97 summits range from 5,000 to over 7,000 meters and are primarily located in Nepal’s Western provinces with 77 in Karnali and 20 in Sudurpaschim.

Approved by the Cabinet on August 3, the initiative aims to attract international climbers to Nepal’s remote regions and spotlight new challenges beyond the country’s iconic giants.
