Nepal Marks Everest Day in Pakistan

Nepal’s embassy in Islamabad marked the 73rd International Everest Day on Friday with an event held under the theme, “Mount Everest: Nepal’s Identity and Pride.”

The programme began with a special video message from Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal. Addressing the gathering, Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan Rita Dhital recalled the first successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, describing the achievement as a result of extraordinary determination, endurance and cooperation.

Dhital also expressed concern over growing environmental degradation and glacier melt in the Himalayas due to climate change, saying effective international cooperation is needed to address the challenges.

She highlighted Nepal’s “Cash for Trash” clean-up campaign and said initiatives such as Nepal Wellness Year 2027 and Visit Nepal Year 2028 aim to position the country as a sustainable, high-value tourism destination.

The event was also addressed by Prime Minister’s Tourism Adviser and National Tourism Coordinator Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Aftab ur Rehman Rana, and Alpine Club of Pakistan President Irfan Arshad.

Speakers underscored the importance of expanding cooperation between Nepal and Pakistan in mountaineering, including the exchange of experiences and best practices.

During the programme, Ambassador Dhital honoured four Pakistani climbers who successfully summited Mount Everest.

The climbers also shared their experiences with participants.

Nepal Embassy Counsellor Purushottam Dhungel briefed attendees on opportunities in Nepal’s adventure tourism sector.

The event featured audio-visual presentations showcasing the world’s highest peaks, Himalayan landscapes and adventure tourism activities.

Participants included Pakistani Everest climbers, senior government officials, ambassadors, high commissioners, diplomats and tourism sector representatives.
