New Web Accessibility Features Implemented to Improve Digital Inclusion

The Department of Information Technology has implemented new web accessibility features aimed at making government websites easier to use, more accessible, and user-friendly for all citizens.

As stated by the Department’s Director General, Shree Chandra Shah, this initiative launched under the Government Integrated Website Management System (GIWMS) specifically targets users with disabilities and those who rely on assistive technologies.

With the implementation of these features, government websites can now be conveniently operated using only a keyboard. These features enable users to access webpage components without using a mouse.

Likewise, a “skip navigation” link has been introduced, which allows keyboard and screen reader users to directly access the main content by skipping all navigation menus.

All significant images, logos, icons, and service-related pictures on the websites now include alt text, making it easier for screen readers to grasp the content.

Similarly, error messages and feedback displayed while filling out forms are now enabled with audio support.

All input sections, such as search and contact forms, now have clear labels and indicators, helping screen readers to use them more conveniently.

For keyboard users, visual indicators have also been included so that they can clearly see their current position on a web-page. Messages displayed after form submission can also be easily detected by screen readers.

Although these features may not be significant for general users, they are highly useful for those who depend on assistive technologies, Shah said. Such improvements are expected to bridge the digital accessibility gap among users, making digital services more inclusive and promoting technology-friendly governance, it is said. (RSS)
