Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Tourist Movement in Everest Region

Heavy snowfall has disrupted the movement of tourists and trekkers in the upper reaches of Khumbu in Solukhumbu, with more than half a metre of snow reported in some areas.

The snowfall began after continuous rainfall in the region, prompting authorities to restrict tourists and trekkers from proceeding further into high-risk areas.

Solukhumbu Chief District Officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar said authorities are coordinating with local governments, police and residents to ensure the safety of tourists already in the upper areas.

Seven foreign tourists stranded in the Imja Tse, or Island Peak, area have also been rescued and brought to a safer location with the assistance of local representatives and residents. The tourists, reportedly of Chinese origin but European nationals, were unable to move down because of difficult weather conditions.

Located inside Sagarmatha National Park, Imja Tse is a major mountaineering destination at an elevation of around 6,165 metres.

Authorities say more than 1,200 tourists are currently in the Everest region, and their situation is being monitored through local governments, police and other agencies.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has urged tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, guides and porters to assess weather conditions before travelling and avoid unnecessary movement in high-altitude areas.

Snowfall has also been reported in Thukla, Thorangse and Gokyo.

The district administration says it is on standby for further rescue operations, with local governments, security agencies and residents coordinating through the District Disaster Management Committee.

Authorities have advised tourists and trekkers to avoid high-risk areas until weather conditions improve and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
