Civic Supremacy Remains NC’s Core Priority: Gagan Thapa

President of the Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said civic supremacy remains the party’s foremost priority and reiterated the party’s commitment to advocating for people’s rights and inclusion.

Addressing the first General Convention of the Nepal Tharu Association, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress, in Sanepa on Saturday, Thapa pledged to ensure greater and more comfortable access of the Tharu community to state mechanisms and institutions.

He acknowledged the historic contribution of the Tharu community to safeguarding national integrity and strengthening the nation.

Thapa recalled that BP Koirala, the founding leader of the Nepali Congress, had entrusted Tharu leaders with key responsibilities within the party, reflecting his deep trust and confidence in the community.

Commenting on the budget unveiled for the upcoming fiscal year, the NC President and former minister said the budget had incorporated several reform-oriented measures but failed to adequately address the concerns of low-income and economically vulnerable groups.

NC General Secretaries Pradip Paudel and Guru Raj Ghimire also stressed the need to protect and promote the rights of the Tharu community, highlighting its significant contribution to Nepal’s border security and economic development.

Similarly, Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Bishma Raj Angdembe said the party should prioritize establishing identity-based agendas at all levels of the state structure.

Former minister Tejulal Chaudhary expressed concern that the Tharu community continues to remain underrepresented in government services, executive bodies and political leadership despite the Constitution, promulgated 11 years ago, guaranteeing proportional inclusion and participatory governance.
