Bus Travel To Get Luggage Tag System in Kathmandu

Long-distance public buses departing from the Kathmandu Valley will now have an airport-style luggage tagging system for passengers.

The new system aims to improve baggage security, prevent luggage loss or mix-ups, and make public transportation more organized.

A formal agreement was signed Friday between the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs to implement the measure.

Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and Senior Superintendent of Police Navaraj Adhikari said the system was necessary to control increasing incidents of luggage theft, misplaced bags, and illegal activities in public transportation.

Federation President Saroj Sitoula said the initiative was inspired by air travel practices to ensure passengers’ belongings remain secure.

The system will come into effect from May 29.

Under the new arrangement, bus counters will attach coded or numbered tags to passengers’ luggage, while travelers will receive matching tag numbers.

Bags will only be handed over after both tags are verified at the destination.
