Trump to Visit China for Talks with Xi Amid Fragile US-China Trade Truce

Beijing has confirmed that US President Donald Trump will travel to China this week for high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the first visit by a US president to China in nearly a decade.

The visit, scheduled from May 13 to 15, comes at a critical moment for relations between the world’s two largest economies, as both sides continue to navigate a fragile trade truce.

Executives from major American corporations, including Boeing, Citigroup and Qualcomm, are expected to accompany the US president, with potential business agreements and commercial discussions on the agenda.

The trip is also seen as a key test of the uneasy trade détente between Washington and Beijing, following months of heightened tensions.

In April 2025, Trump announced sweeping import tariffs on countries worldwide, triggering a tit-for-tat trade conflict between the United States and China.

Both sides imposed tariffs exceeding 100 percent before temporarily pausing them after the last Trump–Xi meeting in South Korea in October.

Despite the pause, trade-related threats and policy uncertainties between the two countries have continued, keeping global markets and diplomatic circles on edge ahead of the upcoming summit.
