Public Officeholders Automatically Removed as New Ordinance Takes Effect

Public officeholders appointed before 26 March 2026 (Chaitra 12, 2082 BS) have automatically been relieved of their positions following the issuance of a new ordinance by President Ram Chandra Paudel.

The provision has been included under Clause 2 (1) of the “Special Provision on Removal of Public Officeholders Ordinance, 2083,” issued on Saturday upon the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.

The clause states that despite any terms, benefits, or tenure specified at the time of appointment, all such public officeholders currently serving shall automatically be removed from their posts once the ordinance comes into effect.

The Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry made the ordinance public today, confirming its implementation.

According to Clause 2 (2), the secretary of the concerned ministry or an authorized official will formally notify the removed officeholders of their dismissal.

The ordinance has already come into force under Clause 1 (2).

The preamble of the ordinance states that the move was necessary to immediately establish legal provisions regarding the removal of public officeholders appointed or nominated under existing laws, especially as the Federal Parliament is currently not in session.

The government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah has stated that the decision aims to strengthen administrative efficiency and inject new momentum into state institutions.

With the ordinance in effect, a total of 1,594 political appointees across various laws and structures have been removed from their posts in a single sweep.
