Remembering the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake

Nepal is observing Earthquake Memorial Day today Baisakh 12 of the Nepali Calendar, commemorating the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck on April 25, 2015.

The earthquake had its epicentre in Barpak of Gorkha.

The disaster, which occurred at 11:56 AM, affected 32 districts and claimed more than 8,962 lives, leaving thousands injured and millions displaced.

Historic landmarks, including Kathmandu’s Dharahara tower and several cultural heritage sites, were destroyed or severely damaged.

Authorities report that over 300,000 families across Nepal, India and Bangladesh were left homeless in the aftermath of the catastrophe.

Even a decade later, the memory of the disaster remains vivid, with experts warning that inadequate enforcement of building codes could still expose the country to severe earthquake risks.

On the occasion, President Ramchandra Paudel paid tribute to the victims and stressed the importance of strengthening dis

aster preparedness, risk reduction and public awareness.

He also noted that rapid urbanization has increased seismic vulnerability and urged authorities to ensure effective implementation of safety measures.

Officials and experts continue to call for sustained awareness and preparedness efforts, warning that Nepal’s high seismic risk makes future large-scale earthquakes a continuing threat.
