How Safe Are Our Public Vehicles?

The government has prioritized transport sector reforms under its 100-day action plan, focusing on safety, digital monitoring, and gender-inclusive mobility.

The roadmap includes mandatory installation of CCTV and dashboard cameras in public vehicles, introduction of women-only “Blue Bus” services, and integration of SOS features in ride-sharing apps to enhance passenger security.

Authorities say these measures aim to modernize transport while ensuring accountability and real-time emergency response.

Ram Hari Pokharel, spokesperson at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, said the priority is the safety and security of riders and the ministry is committed to implement the decision within the deadline. He ensured “we aim to operate the blue bus within 90 days and implement CCTV cameras and SOS systems within 30 days, possibly earlier.”

The government has set April 25th deadline for the reformative measures.

However, the reforms come amid rising fuel prices linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, increasing pressure on transport operators.

The transport entrepreneurs have begun demanding fare adjustments, citing higher operational costs.

Commuters meanwhile are elated stating that safety comes first not only for ladies but all.

“Regarding the blue bus, it’s a good thing, but why only for women? We are also citizens of this country and expect equal facilities. What about us—are we just meant to be a vote bank or remain unemployed?” public added.

Though abiding by the government decision directly pertains to the operators, public transportation drivers are also equally responsible.

A driver said, “Fares should have increased, but they haven’t, making it difficult to sustain operations. We are struggling to pay owners and manage fuel costs, and while CCTV decisions depend on companies, limiting passengers to seats only is not practical.”

The government’s plan signals a push toward safer and more inclusive public transport, though challenges remain in execution and cost management.
