Japan PM’s Takaichi Party Scores Historic Two-thirds Majority

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party has scored a historic victory in Sunday’s election. The LDP won 316 out of 465 seats, marking the first time a single party has secured a two-thirds majority in Japan’s lower house since 1947.

Together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, the LDP now controls 352 seats, giving Takaichi a strong mandate to push her pro-business policies. She pledged a “responsible yet aggressive” fiscal strategy and confirmed she will not reshuffle her Cabinet, formed just four months ago.

Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, called the snap election to strengthen her position. Analysts say this decisive win contrasts sharply with her predecessors, who struggled with corruption scandals, rising costs, and loss of parliamentary control. The challenge ahead for Takaichi will be reviving Japan’s economy and addressing the country’s cost-of-living issues while leveraging her newly strengthened parliamentary majority.
