Historic Ram-Janaki Marriage Festival

In Nepal’s southern Madhesh Province, preparations are under way for the historic Ram–Janaki Bivah Festival, a week-long celebration rooted in the ancient culture of Mithila.

As festivities begin in Janakpur, the revered Lakshminarayan Math in nearby Matihani has started preparations for the traditional Matkor ritual, held one day before Vivah Panchami.

The annual festival features city processions, floral reenactments, and the symbolic Dhanush Yagya, all marking the legendary wedding of Lord Ram and Sita. According to tradition, soil for their sacred wedding altar was taken from Matihani—giving the site deep cultural and spiritual significance.
