China Vows Every Possible Support for Nepal’s 2026 Elections

China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, has pledged Beijing’s full support for Nepal as it prepares for general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Speaking to editors of major media outlets on Friday, Chen said China is “in close coordination” with Nepal’s government, which he noted holds the mandate to conduct the polls.

He highlighted “steady progress” in bilateral projects, including those under the Belt and Road Initiative, acknowledging that delays in large-scale infrastructure are “not unusual”.

Chen added that China’s newly unveiled Five-Year Plan aligns with Nepal’s development needs, with efforts underway to open Chinese markets to Nepali agricultural products now in their “final stage”.

Reaffirming China’s interest in Nepal’s political stability and economic growth, the ambassador said China has incorporated multiple Nepal-focused projects within its national development blueprint.

He also thanked successive Nepali governments for consistently upholding the One-China Principle, adding that Beijing values Kathmandu’s longstanding position.

Chen said both countries continue to support a UN-centered, rules-based global order and have maintained close cooperation in international forums.

Commenting on Nepal’s recent youth-led political activism, he said such movements should be understood in their national context, noting that calls for good governance reflect a desire for positive change.

Outlining priorities of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, Chen said Beijing aims to strengthen the Communist Party’s leadership, broaden economic openness, promote balanced growth, and raise per-capita income to USD 20,000 by the end of the plan period.
