Democrats Seize Control of US Congress in Major Midterm Election Upset

The Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of the United States Congress, delivering a major electoral setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
Democrats flipped several Republican-held Senate seats, including in Texas, South Carolina, Iowa and Kansas, securing a majority in the upper chamber. They also won control of the House of Representatives, giving the party control of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.
The results mark a historic setback for Republicans, with Democrats recording unexpected victories in traditionally Republican strongholds. Kansas, in particular, had not elected a Democrat to the Senate in almost a century.
President Trump expressed surprise at the scale of the Democratic victory. Speaking to Fox News, he acknowledged that Democrats had “done a good job”, adding that he was “a little surprised” by the outcome.
The shift in congressional control is expected to significantly constrain Trump’s legislative agenda over the next two years. With Democrats controlling both chambers, the president could face greater resistance to his policy priorities and legislative proposals.
The Democratic majority could also open the door to renewed impeachment efforts against Trump, potentially marking a third impeachment attempt during his presidency.
The election results represent one of the most significant political reversals for the Republican Party in recent years, reshaping the balance of power in Washington.
