Oral Vaccination against Cholera Rolling Out in Flood Affected Areas
In light of the cholera threat that has emerged after the recent floods in Nuwakot, an oral vaccination campaign has made impressive strides. The campaign has successfully vaccinated over 50,000 people, with a goal of reaching more than 77,000 residents in the affected areas.
This initiative, led by the Public Health Office in collaboration with the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, is focused on curbing the spread of cholera and other water-borne illnesses that have been worsened by the flooding, which has severely impacted drinking water and sanitation after Bhotekoshi floods occurred on August 26.
Dr. Anju Karki, the Chief of the Public Health Office, highlighted the critical need for safe water practices, personal hygiene, and maintaining a clean environment, all of which complement the vaccination efforts. The floods have forced many people from their homes, raising the risk of cholera, especially in holding centers where sanitation is difficult to maintain.
The discovery of E-coli in local water sources has only added to the worries about water-borne diseases. Recent water testing in Bidur Municipality found E. coli contamination in 5 of 15 local water samples following recent floods which has posed more threats in the localities. In response, an emergency vaccination campaign has been rolled out, targeting everyone over the age of one, with the vaccine being offered free of charge at health facilities and holding centers.
The health department has reported that 40,291 individuals have already been vaccinated in municipalities, and they are actively working to reach those in remote areas who are at higher risk. Health officials are encouraging residents to take part in the vaccination programme, which will be available for seven days, and to seek prompt medical care if they show any symptoms of cholera.
They also advise boiling or purifying water, keeping food preparation areas clean, and ensuring a tidy living space to help prevent the spread of diseases in the aftermath of the floods. (RSS)
