Post-Flood Crisis Looms

Recent flooding in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa caused extensive destruction not only in Rasuwa district but also in riverside areas of Nuwakot, Chitwan, Dhading, and Gorkha districts.

In the aftermath, experts have warned that ineffective management of rescue and relief operations following a disaster can create another major crisis.

Based on experiences from similar disasters in previous years, experts have urged authorities to remain particularly vigilant this time.

Effective coordination among the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and volunteer organizations to ensure immediate rescue of those affected, as well as proper arrangements for healthcare, food, drinking water, clothing, and temporary shelter.

Experts have also advised the government to establish mechanisms to prevent duplication in relief distribution and discrimination based on access or influence, ensuring that assistance reaches the people who are genuinely affected.

During natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and earthquakes, there is a high possibility of outbreaks of various infectious diseases.

Doctors have therefore urged authorities and the public to remain especially alert to this risk.

Following floods and other disasters, contaminated water and food can lead to diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and skin infections.

The Ministry of Health and Population has advised people to drink only clean and safe water, consume hygienic food, wash their hands with soap and water, keep wounds or injuries clean, and pay proper attention to waste management.
