Nepal Agrees Justice Measures After Rape and Killing of Three-Year-Old Girl

Nepal’s government and the family of a three-year-old girl who was raped and killed in Bara district have reached a three-point agreement following public calls for justice and stronger action against serious crimes.

The agreement was reached on Saturday evening during talks at the Home Ministry involving Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, other government ministers and officials, and the girl’s parents.

Under the agreement, the government will review existing legal provisions on offences and punishments for serious crimes and prepare recommendations for possible legal reforms.

A seven-member Garima Justice Resolution Committee will be formed by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and will submit its report within seven days.

The government has also agreed to take steps to construct a statue of the girl, Garima Chaudhary, in coordination with the local government, in response to her family’s demand.

Garima was from Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1 in Bara district, southern Nepal.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Gita Chaudhary.

Garima’s parents, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and Manmati Chaudhary, signed on behalf of the family.

The government said the agreement would support the judicial process in the case while addressing the demands raised by the victim’s family.
