September 9 Arson Attack on Supreme Court Affects Settlement of Cases

The Supreme Court has found it challenging to meet its targets for case settlements last fiscal year due to the unexpected damage to its archiving system during the Gen Z movement on September 8-9, 2025. As a result, the apex court was unable to address 27,467 cases during the fiscal year 2082-83 BS (2025-26).

The court building was set ablaze on the second day of the protest, causing extensive loss to its archiving system and disrupting regular judicial proceedings.

The incident also delayed the operation of court benches, affecting the timely hearing and disposal of cases. According to the Supreme Court, the fire has caused damage to its archiving system, and also delayed the sitting of benches within the deadline.

Of the total cases registered during the review period, the Supreme Court settled only 11,469, well below of its target of 19,679. The SC had an accumulated backlog of 38,936 cases that year.

According to Court Spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, the fire on the court building on September 9 causes unexpected loss to the documentation system. As a result, court proceedings were disrupted for long, and locating cases files became difficult. (RSS)
