Zohran Mamdani Elected Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim to lead America’s largest city.

The self-described democratic socialist, who was relatively unknown just months ago, surged to victory on a platform promising to tax millionaires to expand social programs and address housing inequality.

Mamdani defeated independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a closely watched race that drew national attention.

President Donald Trump had warned during the campaign that he would move to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won, a threat that sparked widespread debate over federal authority and local governance.

Meanwhile, Democrats are projected to retain control of the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, consolidating the party’s hold on key East Coast states.

In another major development, California voters approved a ballot measure to redraw the state’s congressional districts in a way expected to strengthen Democratic representation ahead of next year’s elections. (Agencies)
