Venezuela Announces Sweeping Political Prisoner Amnesty

Venezuela Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a sweeping general amnesty Friday aimed at freeing hundreds of political prisoners, just weeks after assuming power following the U.S.-backed overthrow of Nicolás Maduro.

Families of detainees staged a symbolic protest outside the Zona 7 detention centre, chaining themselves together and embracing in tears as news of the amnesty spread.

The proposed law covers political offences dating back to 1999 but excludes serious crimes such as murder, drug trafficking and corruption, and will be fast-tracked to the National Assembly.

Human rights groups welcomed the announcement while urging transparency and broad eligibility to ensure the measure leads to meaningful justice.

Rodríguez framed the amnesty as a step toward national reconciliation, pledging further reforms, including plans to close the notorious El Helicoide prison. (Agencies)
