Trump Plans $1bn–$5bn Lawsuit Against BBC

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will take legal action against the BBC over the way his 6 January 2021 speech was edited in a Panorama programme.

The BBC apologised, acknowledging that the edit had unintentionally created the impression that he had made a direct call for violent action, and stated that the segment would not be broadcast again.

The corporation declined to pay compensation.

Trump indicated that he plans to sue the BBC for an amount between $1 billion and $5 billion, with the filing expected next week.

He said the corporation had acknowledged wrongdoing and that he viewed legal action as necessary.

His lawyers had previously threatened to sue unless the BBC issued a retraction, apology and compensation.

He described the edit as egregious and compared it to a previous dispute with CBS’s 60 Minutes involving Kamala Harris.

In July, Paramount Global agreed to pay $16 million to settle that dispute.

The BBC has issued no further statement beyond its apology.(Agencies)
