Trump Claims Discussion With PM Modi on Russian Oil
US President Donald Trump has once again said he spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about New Delhi’s import of Russian oil, following Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office. Trump told reporters that Modi “is not going to buy much oil from Russia” and emphasized their “very good relationship,” adding that both leaders want the Russia-Ukraine war to end.
PM Modi acknowledged the phone call and thanked Trump for his Diwali greetings, but made no mention of oil purchases, highlighting instead the broader partnership between the two democracies.
Earlier this month, Trump claimed that India had largely reduced its Russian oil imports and would eventually halt them, as part of international pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. India has repeatedly defended its energy sourcing as aligned with national interests and consumer protection, asserting that its decisions are independent of external pressure.
Trump’s statements underline ongoing Western efforts to limit Russian energy revenue, while India maintains that energy security and economic stability remain central to its policies. (Agencies)
