Seven Dead as Hurricane Melissa Approaches Jamaica and Haiti
Hurricane Melissa termed as this years’ most powerful storm has reached Jamaica with three persons confirmed dead.
Heavy winds are tearing through Kingston, the Capital of Jamaica uprooting trees and causing localized flooding.
The storm, which rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane, poses a threat of potentially deadly rainfall and storm surges across the island.
Emergency services are on high alert as streets in the capital and other low-lying areas become impassable.
Authorities have urged residents to seek shelter immediately and avoid traveling, warning that the storm’s size and strength could lead to catastrophic impacts.
Meteorologists warn that Melissa’s combination of extreme winds and torrential rain could trigger flash floods and landslides, especially in Jamaica’s mountainous regions. Power outages and infrastructure damage are already being reported in several areas.
The storm is expected to make landfall in other Caribbean countries including Haiti and Cuba. (Agencies)
