Tensions Soar in Bangladesh Ahead of Ousted PM Hasina’s Verdict

Bangladesh is on high alert as violence erupts ahead of a key verdict in the crimes against humanity trial of ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The International Crimes Tribunal will announce its ruling on Nov 17, the first such trial of a former Bangladeshi leader.

Hasina, 78, faces charges over a deadly 2024 crackdown on protesters that left more than 1,400 dead.

Authorities have deployed thousands of security personnel in Dhaka, where arson attacks, bomb blasts and street clashes have been reported.

The banned Awami League has called for a “Dhaka Lockdown” protest on verdict day.

Hasina is being tried in absentia and could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus has urged calm, saying Bangladesh must avoid further division as it prepares for elections and a national reform referendum in 2026.
