Supreme Court Refuses to Issue Interim Order on Congress Row

The Supreme Court of Nepal on Tuesday refused to issue an interim order against the decision of the Election Commission regarding the legitimate Nepali Congress, in the writ petition filed by the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction.

The Court’s verdict cleared the way for newly elected chairperson Gagan Thapa to exercise legal authority. Thapa was elected during the 2nd Special General Convention held at Kathmandu from 11-13 January, 2026.

The hearing was held before the bench led by Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel, which called both sides for discussion prior to delivering the decisions.

The EC had already endorsed the Special General Convention and updated the party’s executive committee under Thapa’s leadership.

Following the EC’s recognition, Thapa has finalized candidates for the election of the House of Representatives in all 165 constituencies scheduled for March 5, 2026.
