Six Killed as Quake Jolts Central Bangladesh

A moderate earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending thousands scrambling into the streets as buildings shook across the densely packed capital.

At least six people have been killed and dozens injured, according to local media and emergency officials.

The tremor measured at magnitude 5.7 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and occurring at 10:38 a.m. local time, with an epicentre near the Ghorashal area of Narsingdi district, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) from Dhaka originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles).

In the aftermath, in Dhaka, three people died when a building’s roof and wall collapsed, and three pedestrians were struck by falling railings, reported DBC Television.

Buildings swayed, office workers and students fled onto the streets, and rescue teams rushed to inspect damaged structures.

Though Bangladesh has active seismic zones in its north and southeast, the central region around Dhaka experiences fewer quakes of this magnitude.

Authorities are assessing structural damage across the city, urging calm and caution as the full extent of the impact becomes clearer. Agencies
