Shey Phoksundo Lake: Nepal’s Hidden Jewel in Himalayas (Photo Feature)

Shey Pholsundo Lake is one of the natural attractions of Nepal, located in the northwest of the country, Dolpa district. It is Nepal’s deepest and second-largest lake, known for its stunning turquoise color. 

It is protected under the Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is quite famous for trekking, natural observations and cultural exploration. Situated in the trans-Himalayan region of northwest Nepal, Shey Phoksundo National Park is the country’s largest and most ecologically diverse protected area. Established in 1984, covering an area of 3,555 square kilometers across the Dolpa and Mugu districts. 

The park ranges in altitudes from 2,130 to 6,885 meters, showing its abundance of diverse flora and fauna in trans-Himalayan ecosystem.  

The lake lies at an altitude of 3,612 meters from the sea level. It is known for its pristine beauty and spiritual significance.  

The lake itself serves as the crown of the park. 

The park’s landscape features dramatic waterfalls, glacial valleys, and sacred monasteries like the 900-year-old Thashung Gompa, set against the backdrop of towering peaks such as Kanjiroba Himal.

The park supports over 200 bird species and endangered wildlife including the snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr, while also harboring over 286 plant species of ethnobotanical importance. 

Most of the 9,000 inhabitants practice Bon Buddhism, with villages among the highest permanent settlements on Earth. Access to the park is via a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, followed by a trek to Suligad. 

Trekkers can explore Ringmo village and Phoksundo Lake individually, while entry into the inner Dolpo region requires group permits. With its unique convergence of natural splendor and ancient culture, Shey Phoksundo remains one of Nepal’s most remote and extraordinary trekking destinations.

Tourism officials recommend visiting during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when weather conditions are most favorable.

With its blend of breathtaking landscapes, ancient traditions, and rich biodiversity, Shey Phoksundo Lake continues to stand out as one of Nepal’s most treasured natural landmarks.
