NPL: Kathmandu Beat Defending Champions Janakpur
The Kathmandu Gorkhas made a commanding start to the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2025, defeating defending champions Janakpur Bolts in the tournament’s opening match held today in Kirtipur.
The franchise-based Twenty20 league, featuring eight teams and 32 matches, kicked off under floodlights at the TU International Cricket Ground marking the first-ever night game at the venue and a historic moment for cricket in Nepal.
Chasing a target of 131, the Gorkhas cruised to victory with two overs remaining.
Openers Aakash Tripathi and Ben Charlesworth laid the groundwork with a strong 70-run partnership.
Tripathi compiled a steady 39 off 45 balls, while Charlesworth powered the innings with a brisk 46 from just 23 deliveries.
Contributions from Milind Kumar (19), John Simpson (13), and Mohammad Aadil Alam, who sealed the win with a six off the penultimate ball of the 18th over, ensured a comfortable finish.
Janakpur’s bowling attack saw Kishore Mahato, Anil Shah, Lalit Rajbanshi, Jan Nicol and Sanjay Krishnamurthi each claim a wicket.
Earlier, after being put to bat first, Janakpur struggled to build momentum and managed a par score largely due to Aasif Sheikh’s composed half-century (54 off 41).
Only Mayan Yadav (24 not out ) and Lahiru Samarakoon (22) reached double figures, highlighting the team’s batting troubles.
For the Gorkhas, Milind Kumar starred with the ball, taking 3 for 15 from his four overs, while Karan KC, Shahab Alam and Santosh Yadav claimed a wicket apiece.
The NPL 2025 features eight teams, Kathmandu Gorkhas, Janakpur Bolts, Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos, Karnali Yaks, Lumbini Lions, Pokhara Avengers and Sudur Paschim Royals who will compete in a total of 32 matches.
The tournament will run through December 13.
