Renovation of Nepal’s Historic Nuwakot Palace and Taleju Bhawani Begins

In Nepal’s historic Nuwakot district, reconstruction has formally begun on the iconic Taleju Bhawani Temple and the seven-storey Nuwakot Palace, major heritage structures devastated by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake.

Officials from the Department of Archaeology, led by Director-General Saubhagya Pradhanang, performed a traditional Bhumi Kshama Puja before launching ground-level restoration works.

The original quake-damaged structures have now been removed, with the palace dismantled down to its fifth floor.

The reconstruction, carried out by the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage under a government agreement, will restore both monuments to their authentic, historic form.

Local authorities say the long-delayed project is finally gaining momentum, with Vidur Municipality providing water, electricity, storage facilities, and road access for Chinese technical teams.

The broader bilateral plan covers the rebuilding of eight heritage sites in Nuwakot, with the first phase expected to be completed within a year.##
