Nepal’s Election Date Firm as Top Parties Confirm Participation

Nepal’s top political leaders reached a consensus in a high-level meeting, ending weeks of uncertainty over the country’s election timeline.

The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, included Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli, and Nepali Communist Party NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Officials said the gathering resolved uncertainties over whether elections would take place and confirmed that all major parties are prepared to participate.

Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said CPN-UML Chairman Oli expressed his party’s readiness to contest the elections, requesting the government to create a conducive environment.

Deuba confirmed that Nepali Congress supports holding elections without reinstating parliament, while NCP Coordinator Dahal emphasized that elections should proceed on the scheduled date and encouraged all parties, including CPN-UML, to prepare.

The meeting also discussed potential challenges, including adverse weather in February and overlapping local festivals, but officials said the government remains committed to completing the elections on March 5th.

Kharel added that the government plans to address any challenges while maintaining transparency, accountability, and good governance.

With all major parties now on board, Nepal moves forward toward nationwide elections, signaling a key moment in the country’s political calendar.##
