Nepal’s Apex Court Works to Recover Files Destroyed During September 9 Protests

In Nepal, the Supreme Court is working to recover case files destroyed during the Gen-Z protest movement earlier this year.

The fire, which erupted during the September 9, burned 20,000 of the Court’s 24,000 case files, severely disrupting judicial operations nationwide.

Following a public notice issued on November 17, litigants, lawyers, and the Attorney General’s Office have begun submitting duplicates of lost documents.

The Court says it has already recovered more than 750 case files, while nearly 1,500 individuals are in the process of submitting additional records.

Officials say temporary tents have been set up to reconstruct and authenticate damaged files as the judiciary works to restore normal operations.

In total, 23 courts across Nepal suffered damage during the protests, further straining the country’s justice system.
