Nepali-to-Nepal Bhasa Dictionary Launched to Promote Indigenous Language

A Nepali-to-Nepal Bhasa dictionary has been launched in Kathmandu to promote and preserve Nepal Bhasa, also popularly known as Newari, amid growing concerns over the influence of foreign languages through digital platforms.

Compiled by literati Surendra Maharjan, the dictionary has been published by the Nepali Nepal Bhasa Dictionary Publication Committee.

Nepal Academy Vice-Chancellor Abinash Shrestha unveiled the publication at a programme in Kathmandu on Friday.

Speakers at the event stressed the need to promote indigenous and ethnic languages as a key measure to preserve linguistic heritage, cultural identity and traditional knowledge.

Nepal Bhasa is closely associated with the identity and cultural heritage of the Newar community.

On the occasion, NTV World visual editor Rajan Maharjan was felicitated for his contribution to the preservation of Nepal Bhasa.
