Nepal on Alert for Snow and Floods from Cyclone ‘Montha’

Nepal’s weather authorities have issued a nationwide alert as Cyclone Montha, which developed over the Bay of Bengal had begun influencing the country’s weather patterns with heavy snowfall and rain across several provinces.
According to Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the cyclone made landfall in India’s Andhra Pradesh state and is now gradually weakening while moving northwest toward Nepal as a low-pressure system.

The department warned that the remnants of the cyclone could bring intense precipitation and snowfall to high-altitude regions over the next few days.
“Moderate to heavy snowfall is likely across the high mountain and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces,” the department said in a statement.
The Department adds that heavy snow may fall in isolated parts of in Central and Eastern parts of the country.
Authorities have also cautioned of rising water levels in major rivers, including the Koshi, Kamala, Bagmati, and Kankai, and their tributaries, with potential flash floods in smaller streams.

The government has advised people to avoid long-distance travel until Saturday due to the risk of landslides, flooding, and transportation disruptions.
Air travel, agriculture, and tourism are also expected to be affected.
Elsewhere, in the country’s northern District of Mustang, heavy snowfall since early Wednesday morning has disrupted road networks and stranded travelers.
The Charang–Lho Manthang road remains partially blocked, while the Kagbeni–Muktinath section has reopened after clearing operations.

Also, in another northern district, Manang heavy snowfall has also brought life to a standstill.
Chief District Officer Nawa Raj Poudyal said rescue operations were underway but faced challenges due to limited vehicle availability.

Several tourists stranded near Tilicho Lake Base Camp have been rescued, while others are being sheltered in local homestays and private lodges.
All foreign visitors in the region are reported safe.
