Nepal Launches Online Voter Registration Through National ID

Nepal has introduced a new online system that allows citizens to register themselves on the national voter roll using their National ID, marking a significant step toward digitising the country’s electoral process.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced citizens can now submit their voter details directly through the Election Commission’s website.

The change removes the long-standing requirement for people to visit government offices for biometric verification, a step that often caused delays and long queues.

According to the Election Commission, the registration procedure will unfold in four stages.

The system first matches a citizen’s National ID details with the voter database to ensure accuracy.

It then allows users to review the information and correct any errors that appear during verification.

In the third stage, applicants can choose their polling location and upload documents if they have changed their address due to relocation or marriage.

Finally, once all details are reviewed, the form can be submitted online, completing the voter registration process.

Officials say the reform will reduce administrative pressure, minimise data errors and make voter registration more accessible to citizens living in remote areas or those unable to travel to district offices.

The move is seen as part of Nepal’s broader push to modernise public services and strengthen the integrity of its electoral system ahead of future polls.
