Nepal in UNGA: Foreign Minister Khanal Attends 81st UNGA Opening Session

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has participated in the opening session of the high-level debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, which began on Tuesday morning.

The opening session of the high-level debate of the 81st UN General Assembly commenced on Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Present along with the Nepali delegation, Foreign Minister Khanal was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa (Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in New York), Joint Secretary Krishna Prasad Dhakal, and other officials.

During the one-week high-level debate of the General Assembly, Minister Khanal is scheduled to participate in various high-level meetings, ministerial discussions, and side events, as well as hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries and high-ranking UN officials.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Khanal began holding meetings starting Monday.

Nepal is organizing a side event titled ‘Sagarmatha to Sea’ during the General Assembly. Through this event, Nepal is preparing to draw the international community’s attention to climate change, its impacts on the Himalayan region, and the challenges created by climate-induced disasters.

Similarly, Minister Khanal will participate in ministerial meetings of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and G-77 plus China, among others.

This time’s high-level debate of the 81st General Assembly is running until September 28.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to address the high-level debate of the General Assembly on September 24.

Leading the high-level Nepali delegation, Prime Minister Shah flew to New York on Tuesday evening.

The Nepali team includes Prime Minister Shah, Foreign Minister Khanal, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister Kumar Byanjanakar, Foreign Secretary Rai, and other team members.
