NATO Plans to Strengthen Security in the Arctic

NATO announced that it has begun planning a new mission to bolster security in the Arctic.
Spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Colonel Martin O’Donnell said that “planning is underway for NATO has started military planning for an Arctic Sentry mission”.
He added that the operation will strengthen NATO’s presence in the Arctic and far northern regions.
This mission, similar to those launched in the Baltic Sea or on NATO’s eastern flank, is one of the options being considered to enhance security in the Arctic region, and one of the reasons that prompted the US president to announce his intention to annex Greenland.
However, Trump later announced that he had ruled out the possibility of forcibly seizing the Arctic island, a self-governing territory of Denmark and a NATO member.
Trump indicated that he had reached a framework for an agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. (QNA)
