MoHP Urges Public to Take Precautions as Air Pollution Rises in Kathmandu Valley

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has urged the public to take precautionary measures as air pollution levels continue to rise in the Kathmandu Valley and other major cities across the country.
Issuing a public appeal, the Ministry expressed concern over the increasing concentration of air pollutants in recent days and warned that the situation could pose serious health risks if necessary precautions are not followed.
MoHP Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki said that high levels of air pollution can lead to various health problems affecting the heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes, kidneys and other organs. He added that exposure to polluted air can worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma and may also increase the risk of cancer.
Dr. Budhathoki particularly urged people with chronic illnesses and pregnant women to remain cautious and avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary. He also advised children, senior citizens and individuals suffering from respiratory problems such as asthma and chronic cough to take extra precautions.

According to the Ministry, the current rise in air pollution is mainly attributed to emissions from old vehicles, forest fires, industrial activities and smoke and dust generated from construction materials.
Meanwhile, the Department of Environment stated that pollution levels have increased in different parts of the country due to unfavorable weather conditions in recent days. The Department noted that the concentration of fine particulate matter has significantly increased in major cities including Kathmandu and Pokhara.
The Department further warned that the high pollution levels are likely to persist in the Kathmandu Valley for about another week.
In view of the situation, the Ministry has advised the public to avoid outdoor activities, especially during the morning and evening hours, and to wear masks if going outside is unavoidable.
