Mha Puja: The Worship of the Self Being Observed Today

Today, the Newar community of Nepal observes the ancient and unique ritual of Mha Puja in the evening. Mha Puja, a sacred practice centered around self-worship, is a deeply meaningful tradition that highlights the importance of nurturing and honoring one’s own soul.

The essence of Mha Puja lies in the belief that the soul or “Self” is the most sacred and powerful entity in one’s life. According to this tradition, if the soul is content and nurtured, it brings blessings not only to the individual but also to the divine.

Mha Puja translates to “self-worship,” where individuals make offerings to their own body and spirit. Through prayers, rituals, and symbolic acts, the person performing the ceremony acknowledges and respects their inner divinity seeking to purify and renew themselves for the year ahead.
